EMD 2019 - The sea is alive

Our EMD 2019 event was held on 10th May 2019. Unfortunately, due to the bad weather, we had no choice but to move it indoors. Anyway, this did not affect the event that much and we managed to make it as planned in "Pencho Slaveykov" Secondary school.

All students who took part in our event were from the Roma minority. The students not only performed sea-themed dances and participated in a body-art contest, but also drew incredible sea pictures and created a "sea theatre in a box".

The materials sent by the European Commission were given to the students as a reward for their participation.

Our project was called "The Sea is Alive".
The event was organizad in cooperation with our partners from "Pencho Slaveykov" Secondary School in Plovdiv. It was an art performance and a workshop:
- Body art contest - drawing the sea on human bodies by schoolchildren;
- Contest for 3D images and digital drawings of the sea by students.
The two contests are "Education and artistic activities for school children". They combine the new digital methods of learning and raising awareness with the children's imagination and creativity. We work very successfully with "Pencho Slaveykov" Secondary School which is situated in the largest European ethnic neighbourhood - Stolipinovo in Plovdiv, and all students are from the ethnic minorities. This event is a new way of drawing the attention of these children on the sea and its riches.
The objectives are:
- to teach children to value the sea and its riches;
- to involve children from the minorities in education and artistic activities with the sea as a central theme;
- to engage school children in environmental activities such as environmental protection and sea preservation by engaging their creativity and imagination.

EMD 2018 - marine fairy

We are happy to announce that our EMD2018 event took place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on April 27-th.
It was initially planned as a theatre performance and a workshop, but eventually the performance turned out to be so successful that we had to perform it twice at two different places - indoors and outdoors.
Our children (100% from the Roma minority) made their own costumes, wrote their own rhymed script and performed a story with a morale concerning sea pollution and how to keep the oceans and seas clean.
Another group of children took part in the workshop, making panes from sea materials and drawing sea-themed pictures.
Our event was well-attended (about 300 people watched the outdoors performance in the centre of the largest ethnic neighborhood in Plovdiv - Stolipinovo).
The children were very excited to teach their classmates and parents a lesson about sea preservation. Each of them who participated in the event, received a reward.
You will find some pictures here, but there are hundreds more on our Facebook page: here.

Our event consists of two sub-events: an exhibition and a theatre performance as "Education and artistic activities for school children". We work very successfully with a Secondary school "Pencho Slaveykov" where all students are from the ethnic minorities. We will provide sea materials for the children from the 4th and the 5th grade to create sea panes and paintings, and at the opening of the exhibition the school theatre class will play a sea-themed performance.

The event aims to teach children to value the sea and its goods. It will involve children from the minorities in education and artistic activities with the sea as a central theme. They will create panes from sea materials and will talk about all sea goods we use in our lives. They will present a short story about how sea is important to us - a theatre performance that will be enlightning for all other children from the school to watch.

The objectives are:
- to teach children to value the sea and its good;
- to involve children from the minorities in education and artistic activities with the sea as a central theme;
- to engage school children in environmental activities such as environmental protection and sea preservation.

The event's target group is 150 children from the minorities who study at "Pencho Slaveykov" Secondary school in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The age range is 3rd to 8th grade. Their teachers will be involved in the project as supervisors. All children involved will receive a reward for their participation - an EMD notepad and a Bulgarian flag.

Event date: 27/04/2018, 10:00 (EEST)

Event location: Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the yard of "Pencho Slaveykov" Secondary school
